Phantasy Phix: Da Rankings (week of 8/2)

1.       Miguel Cabrera (DET)- Still holds down the number one spot in the rankings. He hits, scores and drives men in. Miggy scored 4 runs hit 2 bombs and knocked in five runs while hitting .320 during the past week.  (1)
2.       Josh Hamilton (TEX)- Despite suffering a minor back injury, Hamilton should be able to get back in his groove. The injury caused him to miss one game but he was able to string together hits in his last eight games. (2)
3.       Carl Crawford (TB)- Crawford has continued to produce in that potent lineup. Don’t expect him to have the same second half as last year. The Rays are surging and so is the speedy left fielder.(4)
4.       Albert Pujols (STL)-  A left calf injury couldn’t keep Pujols from tearing up Pirates pitching in the weekend set and hitting homers in back to back games for the first time since June. (3)
5.       Joey Votto (CIN)- Reaching  base in ten straight and hitting over .400 in those contests, Votto makes a move into the top five.  That shouldn’t surprise anyone. (7)
6.       Carlos Gonzalez (COL)– Gonzalez  went on a tear last week and makes the biggest leap in the rankings, moving up six spots to the six hole. He had a four straight multi hit games and a homer in four straight including a walk-off as he hit for the cycle against the Cubs. (12)
7.       Robinson Cano (NYY)-  Had a solid week against some solid pitching especially in Tampa. Cano continued his strong 2010 with three home runs this past week including a game winning hit off Rays closer Rafael Soriano.  (10)
8.       Alex Rios (CHW)- Had a sluggish week and struggled against two of the worst team in the AL in Oakland and Seattle, he’ll look to turn things around this week as he faces strong pitching in Detroit and a weak team to close this week in Baltimore. (5)
9.       Vladimir Guerrero (TEX)-Guerrero has struggled mightily in July but has been knocking in runs over the past week. Vladi had 6 RBIs and a homer but will face some division foes in the M’s and the A’s. We look for him to get back on track within the next few weeks especially as the Rangers gear up for October.
10.   David Wright (NYM) -D. Wright had 3 multi hit games last week which included a multi homer game as well. Wright can still hit with the best of them. Wright is your best option at third and despite the offensive struggles,  he should continue to put up big numbers. (8)
11.   Ryan Howard (PHI) -Howard may have sprained his ankle and word will come from the Phils' doctors as to whether he will be ready for their next series. He only collected two hits in the week and saw his average dip back under .300.   (14)
12.   Evan Longoria (TB)- Evan the Great or Evan the Terrible, sometimes you don’t know which one to count on the one who goes 3-4 2 runs, a homer and 2 runs batted in against the Tigers or the 2-10 against the Yankees. The Rays have some tough pitching this week but Longoria should be able to bounce back.  (11)
13.   Matt Holliday (STL)-Holliday is giving you everything you could have expected as your number one fantasy outfielder. As long as he’s in that potent lineup, don’t expect much a change in his numbers. (13)
14.   Chris Young (ARI) -Young is a fantasy stud this year and continues to deliver. He had a bit of a power outage last week but uplifted his average via multi-hit games. (15)
15.   Hanley Ramirez (FLA) -Ramirez will look to rebound from a terrible July where he had a power outage, only one homer and watched his average lower to .280. Hanley looks to have clearer skies in August and should heat up for the stretch run. (10)
16.   Ryan Braun (MIL) -Has been surprisingly quiet in the past few weeks at the plate. I don’t know if it’s due to the lineup struggles or the pitches he’s seeing. Braun can still help owners and can be trade bait at the fantasy trade deadline. (16)
17.   Martin Prado (ATL) -He’s going to miss a week and the Braves will miss his scrappiness on the field and at the plate. The Bravos haven’t had that kind of consistency at the plate from anyone but Prado. They will need him down the stretch and so will fantasy owners who can use him at three different positions. (17)
18.    Kevin Youkilis (BOS) -Youkilis had a hit and scored a run in all but one game last week. He still puts up big numbers and if you don’t have A-Rod or D. Wright, the Sox third basemen is the one to have. (NR)
19.   Angel Pagan (NYM) -Though he may be in a time split in a crowded Mets outfield, Pagan has been stellar in his role in their lineup. With the return of Beltran, Pagan has been scorching opposing pitching. Last week alone had three multi hit games and scored a whopping nine runs last week as well. With Jason bay out, Pagan should continue to get plenty of at-bats. (NR)
20.   Dan Uggla (FLA) -At the pretty thin position of second base, Uggla has been the consistent player that owners have come to expect. The power numbers and the RBIs are there but his batting average has stayed above .250 and that’s where he’s made a difference for fantasy owners. (NR)
