The Phillies are well into spring training...13 games to be exact...and I figured it was a good time to catch you Phillies fans up on how exactly our Fightin's regulars are doing this spring. I am going to go down the eight batters in the lineup and then briefly the five starters and some of the key reliever stats so all of you can see how they are doing so far. Keep in mind, not all players have played every game.
The lineup....
1. Jimmy Rollins (SS)
.273 avg, .314 OBP, .545 SLG, 6 runs scored, 2 HRs, 2 RBI, 3 2Bs, 5 BBs, 5 Ks, 1 SB
J-Roll has been working on becoming more of a true lead-off man. Although he struggled to find his swing early in the spring, Rollins has been taking more pitches and hitting more singles and doubles. He has also taken five walks through 13 games. He is on a good pace now to keep improving on his plate discipline and become that lead-off guy that takes pitches rather than swing away at the first one every time.
2. Placido Polanco (3B)
.346 avg, .393 OBP, .346 SLG, 9 hits, 2 runs scored, 1 RBI, 2 BBs, 1 KThe newest edition to the Phillies infield this year has put together some good at-bats in 26 plate appearances. Polanco is a guy who hits the runner over and plays more of a small ball game. He recently suffered a knee injury but looks to be coming back from that either tomorrow or some time this weekend. His transition over to 3rd base has been smooth for the most part and he should add some much needed clutch to the Phillies lineup this year.
3. Chase Utley (2B)
.438 avg, .609 OBP, .438 SLG, 7 hits, 7 BBs, 4 KsChase has only had 16 ABs this spring so I guess you can say he is making the most of them. His average is not too bad but the power numbers are still not showing yet. There is no doubt that he will find his stroke, let's just hope it is sooner than later.
4. Ryan Howard (1B)
.344 avg, .400 OBP, .438 SLG, 1 HR, 6 RBI's, 3 BBs, 9 Ks
Ryan has played in 11 of the 13 games this spring and has held his own for the most part. He never really unleashed his power too much in spring training in the previous years so I am not really surprised to only see one homer at this point. There are nine strikeouts that are notable in 32 at-bats. Howard has been in the cages working on hitting breaking balls which should benefit him by the time the season rolls around. Howard has been seen beating the shift in the past few games, which is also a very good sign.
5. Jayson Werth (RF)
.250 avg, .323 OBP, .464 SLG, 2 HRs, 6 RBIs, 3 BBs, 8 Ks, 1 SBWerth has had 28 at-bats this spring and has really struggled to find consistency. Is it the beard?...Who knows? He has shown that he can hit the long ball and knock runs in when need be. Right now, J-Dub needs to just finish brushing off any excess rust he may have, after all...Dom Brown is nipping at his ankles.
6. Raul Ibanez (LF)
.143 avg, .200 OBP, .321 SLG, 4 hits, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 BBs, 6 KsI guess we can come to the conclusion that Raul has yet to find his comfort at the plate this spring. His four hits come in 28 at-bats while he has only managed to knock in one run. I cannot exactly pinpoint what is wrong here...but it looks like when his timing was off after he came back from his injury last season. Hopefully Raul will use the rest of the spring games to work on his timing and make the six spot in the order another one to fear for pitchers this season.
7. Shane Victorino (CF)
.273 avg, .273 OBP, .273 SLG, 6 hits, 2 runs, 2 KsAfter sitting out the beginning of spring training, Shane has been hitting very average at the plate. Charlie has shifted him around in the lineup from lead-off to the two hole...six and seven spot. Where he will start to begin the season is still in question, but I believe the 7th spot will be it. If Rollins struggles to lead off, Vic may get bumped up.
8. Carlos Ruiz (C)
.214 avg, .316 OBP, .286 SLG, 3 hits, 1 run, 2 RBIs, 3 BBs, 2 KsNothing to go crazy here about for Chooch in spring training. He has only 14 at-bats in seven games, so he has not really gotten a lot of action at the plate. Ruiz is always a very solid defensive catcher and has commented on how he enjoys catching Roy Halladay. Carlos has split time with backup Brian Schneider, who is hitting .400 this spring in 15 ABs.
The rotation...
1. Roy Halladay...3 GS, 10 IP, 1-0 record, 0.90 ERA, 2 BBs, 14 Ks
2. Cole Hamels...3 GS, 10.2 IP, 1-0 record, 1.69 ERA, 2 ER, 3 BBs, 9 Ks3. Joe Blanton...3 GS, 11 IP, 2-0 record, 4.09 ERA, 15 hits, 5 ER, 0 BB, 5 Ks4. J.A. Happ...2 GS, 6.1 IP, 0-0 record, 0.00 ERA, 3 hits, 2 BBs, 5 K's (start vs. FSU not included)5. Kyle Kendrick...2 GS, 3 G, 9 IP, 0-0 record, 0.00 ERA, 4 hits, 2 Ks
*Kendrick is competing against Moyer for the #5 spot...Moyer has only pitched 'B' games to this point...
Relievers...
J. Contreras...6.2 IP, 8.10 ERA
D. Baez...5 IP, 0.00 ERA, 1 win
C. Durbin...4.1 IP, 0.00 ERA, 6 Ks
R. Madson...3 IP, 6.00 ERA, 1 win
A. Bastardo...3 IP, 9.00 ERA
S. Escalona...4 IP, 11.25 ERA, 1 win
Well...there you have it...those starting pitchers are fairing well so far but the hitters seem to be a little behind. The bullpen has some bright spots and hopefully Lidge and Romero will start making some progress this spring too. Today, Lidge pitched for the Double-A squad and gave up three hits and one run in an inning of work.
Don't forget...Phillies at 7:05 tomorrow night as Kyle Kendrick takes the mound against Baltimore.
The lineup....
1. Jimmy Rollins (SS)
