Apter Hours...Phillies 6, Yankees 2...Werth goes deep in win

The Phillies pitching staff continued their consistency today as Joe Blanton had a solid outing. That paired with a big day by Jayson Werth gave the Phils a 6-2 win over the Yankees today.

Pitching...Joe Blanton has not sailed through spring training like the majority of the Phillies starters but has maintained some consistency in his past two starts. Blanton had an alright performance at best in today's game. He worked five innings and gave up two runs on seven hits. Joe also fanned three batters. Seven hits is not really what you want to see but to only give up two runs out of the seven hits, I'll take it...the Phillies bullpen kept the Yanks at bay as Jose Contreras, Sergio Escalona and Chad Durbin pitched the final four. Contreras pitched two innings and struck out two while Escalona walked two in his inning. Durbin struck out one in the ninth to finish the game off for the win. Another great outing for the Phillies bullpen and a nice start by Blanton.

Hitting...The Phillies took an early 1-0 after Jimmy Rollins stole third thanks to his lead-off double. A Ryan Howard single would knock him in to tally the first run. Carlos Ruiz hit a sac fly to knock in Cody Ransom in the second inning to up the lead to 2-0. Jayson Werth closed the deal in the fifth as he jacked a three-run homer to give the Phils a 5-2 lead. They tacked on one more run on an RBI by Dewayne Wise in the sixth. Werth finished with two hits, one run and three RBI's and Ryan Howard swung the bat well today, tallying two hits and one RBI. Also, in an effort to make other confident in his role as a lead off man, Jimmy Rollins was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. A solid day for the Phillies bats but the Werth homer was the icing on the cake.

On the paths...Jimmy stole his first base of the spring today....Dewayne Wise was not so lucky as he got caught stealing on the base paths.

Up Next...The Phils big league spring training squad has the day off tomorrow but not all players get a rest. J.A. Happy will start a Triple-A game while Brad Lidge will see his first action of the spring with the Double-A squad. Both of those games are at 1:05. The Phillies are next in action at 7:05pm on Friday against Baltimore.

Injury updates...Polanco may start Friday but is not rushing himself....JC Romero threw to batters for the first time this spring and he mentioned he experience no setbacks and that his reflexes and elbow are good.
