Apter Hours: Super Bowl XLIV thoughts

For the weeks building up to this game, I was not sure how to thing or who to pull for. The city who had never won a Super Bowl in franchise history and had overcome hurrican Katrina?...or the team that currently has the best quarterback in the NFL and a reputation as one of the toughest teams to beat in football. Considering I am an Eagles fan, it did not really matter to me but I was hoping for a good game.

The game started off as I imagined. Peyton Manning driving the Colts down the field confidently and taking an early 7-0 lead. They would eventually stretch that to a 10-0 advantage by the end of the first quarter and it looked as if the up and coming Saints had finally met the end of their path. The second quarter was impressive as New Orleans sidelined Peyton Manning for the majority of it by taking up over 12 minutes in the quarter. By halftime, it was 10-6, thanks to Garrett Hartley's two field goals. Momentum shifted towards the Saints going into the locker room and they held that throughout halftime into the third quarter.

The second half was all Saints despite one score by Joseph Addai. As I saw it, whoever made the first mistake was going to lose. Brees and Manning are both such great quarterbacks and it was going to be in their hands to determine the fate. The Saints came out of the half with a surprising onside kick recovery which led to a score, making it 13-10. The Colts went on top 17-16 later in the quarter but after that, Drew Brees got into a groove. The Saints stuck to the shorter passing game and it helped them out greatly throughout the second half. The Saints rode the momentum throughout the remainder of the game and the defense came up with a huge play. The Colts ran a play that they run a lot in games and Peyton Manning got picked off for six points and that pretty much put it in the books. I apologize if I did not recap the entire game but I couldn't remember too much...just the highlights.

My final thoughts are that whether it was Brees or Manning to throw a pick or one of the other players to turn the ball over...the opposing team would win. Other than the onside kick, that interception was the only turnover of the game. Brees played a pretty mistake-free football game and deserved the victory in the end. The whole Superbowl experience for me was alright at best. The commercials were all pretty subpar...my favorite one was the Doritos commercial with the kid slapping his mom's boyfriend after touching his Doritos. Even though I love The Who and all of the music I have listened to over the years...they are clearly past their time and gave a mediocre halftime show if that. Overall I would give the Superbowl viewing experience a 6.5. A good game but the commercials and lack of an effective halftime show kinda lowered it for me. No doubt, this game was played between the two best teams in th NFL and the top two QBs. If these teams keep it up, I wouldn't be surprised to see both of them deep in the playoff run of their respective conferences next year ending up in a possible rematch.
